Tatev

A cliff-edge monastery reached by a record-breaking cable car

Tatev Monastery stands on a basalt plateau at the edge of a deep gorge, and in the Middle Ages it was one of Armenia's great centres of learning. The Wings of Tatev cableway glides for about 5.7 kilometres over the gorge from the village of Halidzor, a journey as memorable as the arrival. The monastery complex includes a 9th-century church, a fortified wall and a swaying stone column. Below the cliffs, the Devil's Bridge is a natural rock arch over the river with warm mineral pools.
