Yerevan

The pink city in the shadow of Mount Ararat

Yerevan is one of the world's oldest continuously inhabited cities, though much of its centre was rebuilt in the 20th century in pinkish volcanic tuff that glows in the evening. The Cascade, a vast stairway of fountains and sculptures, climbs to a view over the city towards the snowy peak of Ararat. The Matenadaran holds thousands of ancient manuscripts, and the Genocide Memorial at Tsitsernakaberd is a moving place of remembrance. Evenings are spent on café terraces around Republic Square and its singing fountains.
