North America
Reliable sunshine, trade winds and pastel Dutch-Caribbean streets.
Aruba sits just off the Venezuelan coast, south of the main hurricane belt, which gives it steady sunshine and a dry, almost desert landscape of cacti and wind-bent divi-divi trees. Eagle Beach and Palm Beach are its famous stretches of white sand, while Arikok National Park covers rugged hills, caves and the rocky Natural Pool. Oranjestad adds colourful Dutch colonial facades.
This is an easy, polished island: resort strips, good snorkelling, windsurfing at the northwest tip near the California Lighthouse and dinners of fresh fish or keshi yena. Buses serve the main coast, but a jeep helps for Arikok's rough tracks. Weather is dependable all year; January to June is especially good, and late autumn brings brief showers rather than storms.
