Canals, gables and medieval Flanders
Bruges grew rich on the cloth trade in the Middle Ages and then fell into a long quiet sleep, which preserved its centre almost intact. Today its canals, stepped-gable houses and cobbled squares make up a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Markt is overlooked by the Belfry, whose 366 steps lead to fine views, and the Basilica of the Holy Blood stands on the Burg. The Groeninge Museum holds Flemish Primitive masterpieces by Jan van Eyck. Take a canal boat, visit the Beguinage, and stay after the day-trippers leave.
