North America
Pink sand, pastel cottages and a very British island in the Atlantic.
Bermuda sits alone in the Atlantic, far north of the Caribbean, a fishhook of islands with pink-tinged beaches, limestone cliffs and neat pastel cottages with white stepped roofs. Horseshoe Bay and Elbow Beach are the classic swimming spots, the old town of St George's is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the Royal Naval Dockyard and Crystal Caves are both worth time.
It feels orderly and genteel, with afternoon tea, Bermuda shorts and a proper pub culture alongside fish sandwiches and fish chowder laced with rum and sherry peppers. Visitors cannot rent conventional cars, so buses, ferries, scooters and small electric runabouts do the job. May to October is swimming weather; winter is mild and quieter, and late summer to autumn brings hurricane risk.
