Paro

The Tiger's Nest on a sheer cliff

Paro is where most visitors arrive in Bhutan, flying into a steep valley of rice fields and farmhouses. The famous sight is Taktsang, the Tiger's Nest, a monastery built on a cliff hundreds of metres above the valley, reached by a steep hike of a few hours. In town, Rinpung Dzong, a fortress-monastery, hosts the spring Paro Tsechu festival with masked dances, and the National Museum sits in a watchtower above it. Bhutan requires visitors to book through licensed tour operators and pay a daily fee.
