A capital of dzongs and prayer flags
Thimphu is one of the world's quietest capitals, famous for having a white-gloved policeman directing traffic rather than traffic lights. Tashichho Dzong houses the government and the central monk body. The Buddha Dordenma, a huge gilded statue, overlooks the valley, and the National Memorial Chorten is circled by elderly pilgrims all day. Visit the weekend market, the textile museum and the takin preserve, home to Bhutan's odd national animal. Traditional dress is still worn daily.
