A river that fans out into the Kalahari
The Okavango River never reaches the sea. Instead it spreads into the Kalahari in a delta of papyrus channels, floodplains and palm-fringed islands, one of the largest inland deltas in the world and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The floodwaters peak in the dry winter months, drawing elephants, buffalo, lions, leopards, wild dogs and red lechwe. Visitors fly into remote camps by light aircraft and explore by mokoro, a traditional dugout canoe, by motorboat and on foot. Moremi Game Reserve protects the eastern side, and Maun is the gateway town.
