Africa
Vast rainforest, the mighty Congo River and rare mountain gorillas.
The Democratic Republic of the Congo is enormous, covering much of the Congo Basin rainforest and the river that gives it its name. Kinshasa is a sprawling, music-loving capital facing Brazzaville across the water. In the far east, Virunga National Park is home to mountain gorillas and the Nyiragongo volcano, while Kahuzi-Biega near Bukavu protects eastern lowland gorillas.
Armed conflict affects parts of the east, and many governments advise against travel to large areas of the country. Travellers should check their government's current travel advice before planning a trip. Where visits are possible, they are usually organised through specialist operators. Congolese rumba, grilled fish and cassava leaves are cultural staples. The drier months from June to September are generally the easiest time to travel.
