Democratic Republic of the Congo
A vast river capital and the home of rumba
Kinshasa is one of the largest cities in Africa, facing Brazzaville across the Congo River. It is the home of Congolese rumba, a musical tradition inscribed by UNESCO, and live bands play in bars across the city. The Académie des Beaux-Arts and the city's galleries reflect a long painting tradition, and the National Museum displays masks and sculpture. On the city's outskirts, Lola ya Bonobo is a sanctuary for orphaned bonobos, great apes found only in the DRC.
