A river capital facing Kinshasa across the Congo
Brazzaville sits on the north bank of the Congo River, looking across to Kinshasa, the closest pair of capitals apart from Rome and the Vatican. The Basilique Sainte-Anne, with its green-tiled roof, is the city's architectural landmark, and the Mausoleum of Pierre Savorgnan de Brazza honours the city's founder. Poto-Poto is known for its painting school and markets. Just downstream, the Congo River's rapids begin, best seen from the viewpoint at Le Djoué.
