Gorillas, forest elephants and swampy baïs
Odzala-Kokoua National Park in the north of the Republic of the Congo protects a large area of Congo Basin rainforest and savannah. It is one of the best places to see western lowland gorillas, with habituated groups tracked on foot. Forest clearings called baïs attract forest elephants, buffalo and sitatunga to drink and feed on minerals. Kayak trips on the rivers and walks through the forest reveal chimpanzees, monkeys and a great variety of birds. A small number of remote lodges serve visitors.
