A volcanic island ringed by a lagoon
Rarotonga is the main island of the Cook Islands, a small volcanic island whose jagged green peaks are ringed by a lagoon and a coral reef. A single road runs around the coast in about thirty-two kilometres, and buses simply go clockwise or anticlockwise. Muri Lagoon is perfect for kayaking and snorkelling, and the Cross Island Track climbs past the Needle, Te Rua Manga. The Saturday morning Punanga Nui Market and island nights with drum dancing show off Cook Islands culture.
