Cameroon's harbour city and cultural hub
Douala sits on the estuary of the Wouri River and is Cameroon's economic engine and main port. The Doual'art centre and the city's public art installations reflect an active contemporary art scene, and the Akwa and Bonanjo districts hold colonial buildings, including the Pagoda of the Douala kings. Markets such as the Marché des Fleurs are full of produce and fabric. Grilled fish with plantain and ndolé, a bitterleaf stew, are local favourites. Limbe and Mount Cameroon are a short drive away.
