West Africa's highest volcano, rising from the sea
Mount Cameroon rises straight from the Atlantic coast to around 4,040 metres, the highest peak in West and Central Africa, and it is still active. Treks from the town of Buea climb through rainforest and montane grassland to the summit over two or three days, and an annual mountain race runs to the top and back. At the foot of the mountain, Limbe has black volcanic sand beaches, a botanic garden and a wildlife centre caring for gorillas, chimpanzees and drills.
