A sugar-era town frozen in time
Trinidad grew rich on sugar in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries and then stood still, leaving one of the most complete colonial towns in the Americas. Cobbled streets lead up to the Plaza Mayor, lined with mansions now housing museums, and the yellow bell tower of the former San Francisco convent looks over red-tiled roofs. Evenings bring live music on the steps of the Casa de la Música. The Valle de los Ingenios, with its old sugar mills and slave watchtower, lies just outside town, and Playa Ancón is a short ride away.
