Tobacco fields beneath limestone mogotes
The Viñales Valley in western Cuba is a landscape of red earth and tobacco fields, dotted with mogotes, steep-sided limestone hills covered in vegetation. It's a UNESCO-listed cultural landscape, where farmers still work the land with oxen and dry tobacco leaves in thatched barns. Visitors hike or ride horses to farms to see cigars rolled by hand, explore caves such as the Cueva del Indio by boat, and watch sunset over the valley. The village itself is a single main street of colourful houses offering rooms.
