Morna, carnival and colonial streets on São Vicente
Mindelo, on the island of São Vicente, is the liveliest town in Cabo Verde and the home of morna, the melancholy music made famous by Cesária Évora. Its centre has pastel-painted colonial buildings, a fish market and the Torre de Belém, a small replica of the Lisbon tower. Bars and restaurants host live music most nights, and the February carnival is the biggest in the islands. The ferry to Santo Antão leaves from the harbour, and Monte Verde gives a view over the bay.
