Green valleys and cliffside trails in the Atlantic
Santo Antão is the most dramatic island in Cabo Verde, reached by ferry from Mindelo. Its northern side is green and steep, with terraced valleys of sugar cane, bananas and yams, while the south is arid. A network of old cobbled paths links villages, and the walks from the crater of Cova down through the Paul Valley, or along the coast from Ponta do Sol to Fontainhas, are among the finest hikes in West Africa. Grogue, a rum made from sugar cane, is distilled in small village presses.
