Rainforest, sea cliffs and millions of migrating red crabs.
Christmas Island is an Australian territory in the Indian Ocean, far closer to Java than to Perth. Most of it is protected as Christmas Island National Park, with rainforest, sea cliffs, blowholes and The Dales, a chain of waterfalls and pools. The island is famous for its red crab migration, when millions of crabs march from forest to sea, and for seabirds such as the Abbott's booby and frigatebirds.
The small community around Flying Fish Cove blends Chinese, Malay and European Australian cultures, which shows in the food and the temples. It is reached by air from mainland Australia, and there is little public transport, so a hire car is the way to explore. The drier months suit hiking and diving; the crab migration usually follows the first wet-season rains, often in November or December.
