The island of the red crab migration
Christmas Island lies in the Indian Ocean south of Java, and most of it is national park, covered in rainforest. It is famous for its red crab migration: each year, with the start of the wet season, tens of millions of red crabs march from the forest to the sea to spawn, covering roads and beaches. The island is also home to rare seabirds, such as the Abbott's booby and the Christmas Island frigatebird, and the waters just offshore offer clear diving along steep reef walls, with whale sharks in season.
