Dominica

Rainforest, hot springs and waterfalls on a steep volcanic island.

Dominica is the Caribbean's rugged green outlier, with more rainforest than beach. Morne Trois Pitons National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, holds Trafalgar Falls, the Emerald Pool and the hike to the steaming Boiling Lake. The Waitukubuli National Trail runs the length of the island, and the Kalinago Territory is home to the island's Indigenous Kalinago people.

Days are active: river swims, hot springs, snorkelling in the volcanic bubbles at Champagne Reef and boat trips to see the sperm whales that live off the west coast. Evenings are quiet, with Creole food and callaloo soup. Roads are winding, so drive slowly or use local minibuses. February to April is driest; the late-summer hurricane season is best avoided.
