South America
Windswept islands where penguins far outnumber the people.
The Falkland Islands are a remote South Atlantic archipelago of peat moorland, white-sand beaches and sheep farms. Stanley, the small capital, has painted tin-roofed houses and Christ Church Cathedral with its whalebone arch. Beyond it, Volunteer Point hosts a large king penguin colony, and outer islands such as Sea Lion, Saunders and Carcass teem with gentoos, rockhoppers and black-browed albatrosses.
Most visitors arrive on expedition cruises heading to or from South Georgia and Antarctica, while others fly in for a stay in farm lodges. Life is quiet, the weather changes quickly and the wind rarely stops. October to March is the wildlife season, with December and January the peak of penguin chick-rearing; in winter many lodges close.
