A tiny harbour capital among penguins and wild coasts
Stanley is the only town of any size in the Falkland Islands, a harbour of brightly painted houses, a whalebone arch beside Christ Church Cathedral and pubs serving fish and chips. The islands' real attraction is wildlife: Gypsy Cove, a short walk from town, has Magellanic penguins, and Volunteer Point, a long drive across peat and moorland, holds a large colony of king penguins. Smaller islands such as Sea Lion Island and Carcass Island, reached by small plane, have albatrosses and elephant seals. Many visitors arrive on cruise ships.
