Grenada

Nutmeg-scented hills, a sweeping bay and an underwater sculpture park.

Grenada is known as the Spice Isle, and nutmeg, cinnamon and cocoa still grow in its steep, green interior. St George's wraps around a horseshoe harbour called the Carenage, overlooked by Fort George, and nearby Grand Anse Beach is one of the Caribbean's best. Grand Etang's crater lake and rainforest, the underwater sculpture park at Molinere Bay and sleepy Carriacou round it out.

It is friendly and unhurried, with spice and chocolate tours, rum from the water-wheel-powered River Antoine distillery and the national dish, oil down, a one-pot stew cooked in coconut milk. Numbered minibuses zip between towns. Lying far south, it is hit less often by hurricanes; January to May is driest, and the late-summer months are wetter.
