Gibraltar

A limestone rock of monkeys, tunnels and views across to Africa.

Gibraltar is a British Overseas Territory at the southern tip of the Iberian Peninsula, reached by walking or driving across the border from La Línea in Spain. The Rock dominates everything: the Upper Rock Nature Reserve is home to Barbary macaques, St Michael's Cave glows with stalactites, and the Great Siege Tunnels were hacked into the cliffs in the eighteenth century.

It is a compact place that mixes British pubs and red postboxes with a Mediterranean feel, and many people visit as a day trip from Spain. Main Street is lined with shops, Europa Point looks across the strait to Morocco, and dolphin trips head out into the bay. Spring and autumn are ideal; summer is warm and busy, and winter is mild.
