Africa
Waterfalls, highland plateaus and the source of great rivers.
Guinea is a green, mountainous country and the source of both the Niger and Senegal rivers. The Fouta Djallon highlands are full of waterfalls, cliffs and hiking trails around towns such as Dalaba and Labé, while the Îles de Los lie just off the capital, Conakry. In the south-east, Mount Nimba's forests are a UNESCO World Heritage site shared with Côte d'Ivoire.
Tourism is limited, so travel is adventurous, with rough roads, shared taxis and simple guesthouses. Rice with peanut or leaf sauces, grilled fish and fresh fruit are staples, and Guinean music has a big reputation. November to March is the best time to visit; July and August are extremely wet, with Conakry among the rainiest capitals in the world.
