Waterfalls and highlands of West Africa's water tower
The Fouta Djallon is a highland plateau in central Guinea, the source of several of West Africa's major rivers. It is a landscape of sandstone cliffs, grassy tablelands and waterfalls such as the Chutes de Kinkon and the Voile de la Mariée. Treks from the towns of Dalaba, Labé and Pita lead to Fula villages linked by footpaths, natural bridges and viewpoints. The climate is cooler than on the coast, and the region was historically the seat of an Islamic state, which shaped its culture.
