Isfahan

Blue domes around one of the world's great squares

Isfahan was the capital of the Safavid shahs, who built it around Naqsh-e Jahan Square, one of the largest city squares in the world. Its sides hold the Shah Mosque, covered inside and out in blue tilework, the exquisite Sheikh Lotfollah Mosque, the Ali Qapu Palace and the entrance to the bazaar. Along the Zayandeh River, the arched Si-o-se-pol and Khaju bridges are favourite places for an evening walk. The Armenian quarter of Jolfa has the frescoed Vank Cathedral.
