Palaces and museums beneath the Alborz peaks
Tehran sprawls south from the Alborz mountains, whose snow-capped peaks, including Mount Damavand, are visible on clear days. Its main sights are its museums and palaces: the Golestan Palace, the Qajar dynasty's mirrored and tiled royal complex; the National Museum, with finds from Persepolis; and the National Jewellery Treasury. The Grand Bazaar runs for kilometres south of Golestan, and the leafy northern districts such as Tajrish and Darband have hillside tea houses and walking trails into the mountains.
