Jersey

Granite coves, huge tides and a French accent just off Normandy.

Jersey is the largest of the Channel Islands, a Crown Dependency lying much closer to France than to England. Its coastline swings from the long surf beach of St Ouen's Bay to rocky coves in the north, and the tide here is one of the biggest in the world. Mont Orgueil Castle, the Jersey War Tunnels and La Hougue Bie give it real historical depth.

Days are easy-going: cliff paths, seafood and Jersey Royal potatoes, cream teas and dairy from the island's famous cows. Most visitors fly or take a ferry from Britain, and ferries also run to France. May to September is the best time for beaches and walking, with long, bright evenings; winter is quiet and many seasonal businesses close.
