Jersey

Jersey

Sandy bays and castles off the Normandy coast

Jersey is the largest of the Channel Islands, a Crown Dependency closer to France than to England. Its capital, St Helier, sits on a wide bay with Elizabeth Castle on a tidal islet offshore, reached on foot at low tide or by amphibious boat. Mont Orgueil Castle towers over the harbour of Gorey. The Jersey War Tunnels tell the story of the German occupation during the Second World War. Beaches like St Ouen's Bay are good for surfing, and the tides here are among the largest in the world. Jersey Royal potatoes and seafood are local pride.
