North America
Two volcanic islands, a hilltop fortress and an easy island rhythm.
Saint Kitts and Nevis are two small volcanic islands separated by a narrow channel. On Saint Kitts, Brimstone Hill Fortress sits on a steep outcrop with views to neighbouring islands, Mount Liamuiga rises through rainforest, and the South East Peninsula ends at calm beaches such as Cockleshell Bay. Nevis is quieter still, with Pinney's Beach, old plantation inns and Charlestown, birthplace of Alexander Hamilton.
Days are slow and friendly: grilled lobster and goat water, rum punch at beach bars, and a scenic railway that once carried sugar cane around Saint Kitts. A short ferry links the two islands. December to April is the driest and most comfortable time, and September is the month to avoid for storms.
