Saint Kitts and Nevis

St Kitts

Volcano views and a mountaintop fortress

St Kitts is a green, volcanic island dominated by Mount Liamuiga, whose crater can be reached on a guided hike. Brimstone Hill Fortress, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is a vast eighteenth-century British fort with sweeping views. The old sugar railway now runs a scenic train around much of the island. Basseterre, the capital, has Georgian buildings around the Circus. The beaches are mostly on the southeast peninsula, including Cockleshell Bay, which looks across the Narrows to the neighbouring island of Nevis.
