Gulf-front towers, old souqs and a long evening café culture.
Kuwait is a small, wealthy Gulf state that most travellers see on a short visit. The Kuwait Towers, with their blue-green spheres, mark the waterfront, and the Grand Mosque, Souq Al-Mubarakiya and the House of Mirrors show different sides of the city. Failaka Island holds remains of an ancient Greek settlement, and the Tareq Rajab Museum has a fine collection of Islamic art.
Life revolves around malls, seafront walks and long dinners of machboos and grilled fish, and alcohol is banned. Taxis and hire cars are the practical way around, as the city is spread out. November to March is the time to go; summer is among the hottest anywhere, with temperatures often above 45°C.
