Baalbek

Some of the largest Roman temples ever built

Baalbek, known to the Romans as Heliopolis, holds one of the largest temple complexes of the Roman Empire. Six columns of the Temple of Jupiter still stand, among the tallest of the classical world, and the Temple of Bacchus is one of the best-preserved Roman temples anywhere, with richly carved ceilings and doorway. In the quarry nearby lies the Stone of the Pregnant Woman, one of the largest stones ever cut. The Bekaa Valley around it is Lebanon's wine country.
