Saint Lucia

Twin volcanic peaks rising straight out of a green sea.

Saint Lucia is steep, green and dramatic. The Pitons, two volcanic spires near Soufrière, are the island's emblem, with the steaming Sulphur Springs, waterfalls and old cocoa estates in the hills behind them. The north is livelier around Rodney Bay and Pigeon Island National Landmark, while Marigot Bay is a sheltered, palm-lined anchorage popular with sailors.

The Friday night street party in Gros Islet brings grilled fish and loud music, and local food leans on green fig and saltfish, callaloo and cocoa tea. Roads are twisting, so short distances take time. December to April is the dry season, and September to October the wettest stretch with the highest hurricane risk.
