Africa
A high mountain kingdom of pony treks, passes and snow.
Lesotho sits entirely above 1,000 metres, a mountain kingdom surrounded by South Africa. The Sani Pass climbs from the Drakensberg to one of the highest pubs in Africa, Maletsunyane Falls plunges into a gorge near Semonkong, and the Katse Dam fills a highland valley. Thaba Bosiu, the mountain stronghold of King Moshoeshoe I, is a national landmark.
Life in the highlands revolves around herders in Basotho blankets and conical hats, and pony trekking between villages is the classic way to explore. Food is simple, with papa (maize porridge), stews and vegetables. Most visitors arrive overland from South Africa. Spring and autumn are ideal for hiking; winter from June to August is cold with snow, and some high passes can close.
