Sani Pass

A mountain road climbing into the kingdom in the sky

Sani Pass climbs from the Drakensberg foothills in South Africa to the Lesotho plateau at around 2,870 metres, a series of hairpin bends that requires a four-wheel-drive vehicle. At the top, a mountain lodge claims one of the highest pubs in Africa, with views down the escarpment. Beyond lie the highlands of Lesotho, a country where the lowest point is higher than in any other nation. Basotho herders wrapped in blankets ride ponies across the hills, and pony treks visit villages and mountain trails.
