Kaunas

Interwar modernism where two rivers meet

Kaunas served as Lithuania's temporary capital between the world wars, and that era left a remarkable collection of modernist buildings now on the UNESCO World Heritage list. Laisvės alėja, a long pedestrian boulevard, links the new town to the old, where a red-brick castle and the Town Hall, nicknamed the White Swan, stand near the meeting of the Nemunas and Neris rivers. The Devils' Museum displays thousands of devil figures, and the Ninth Fort is a sober memorial to the Holocaust.
