Europe
Superyachts, a famous casino and a Mediterranean view from every corner.
Monaco is a city-state of about two square kilometres on the French Riviera, built steeply up the hillside between the sea and the mountains. Monte-Carlo has the Casino and its grand square, while the old town on the Rock holds the Prince's Palace, the cathedral and the Oceanographic Museum perched on a cliff above the water.
It is glossy and compact, best done on foot with public lifts and escalators between levels, and it combines easily with Nice, Èze and Menton. Expect high prices and Riviera-style food, from socca to seafood. Spring and autumn are ideal; summer is busy and hot, and Grand Prix weekend in late May or early June makes it crowded and expensive.
