Avenue of the Baobabs

Giant baobabs lining a dirt road at sunset

On the road between Morondava and Belo Tsiribihina in western Madagascar, a line of Grandidier's baobabs, some of them hundreds of years old and around thirty metres tall, stands along a red dirt track. They are the survivors of forest that once covered the area. Sunrise and sunset, when the trunks glow and silhouettes form against the sky, are the times to come. Nearby are the intertwined Baobabs Amoureux and the Kirindy Forest, known for fossa and giant jumping rats.
