Ohrid

Ancient churches on an ancient lake

Ohrid sits on the shore of Lake Ohrid, one of Europe's oldest lakes, and together they form a UNESCO World Heritage site. The old town climbs a hill from the water past Byzantine churches, a Roman-era theatre and Samuel's Fortress. The Church of St John at Kaneo, on a cliff above the lake, is one of the most photographed spots in the Balkans. Take a boat along the shore to the monastery of St Naum and the springs of the Black Drin.
