An old bazaar and a city of statues
Skopje is a city of contrasts, its Ottoman Old Bazaar of mosques, hammams and caravanserais sitting across the Vardar river from a centre filled with large statues and neoclassical-style buildings. The Stone Bridge links the two halves, and the Kale Fortress overlooks them. Mother Teresa was born here, and a memorial house tells her story. Just outside the city, Matka Canyon has a lake, caves and monasteries reached by boat or on foot.
