Macao

Portuguese squares, Chinese temples and casino lights side by side.

Macao is a small special administrative region of China on the Pearl River Delta, reached by ferry or bridge from Hong Kong or overland from mainland China. Its UNESCO-listed historic centre blends Portuguese and Chinese heritage: the façade of the Ruins of St Paul's, the wave-patterned tiles of Senado Square and the incense-filled A-Ma Temple. Across the water, the Cotai Strip is lined with vast resort casinos.

Food is a big reason to come, from warm Portuguese egg tarts and pork chop buns to Macanese dishes such as African chicken and minchi. Everything is compact, so a day or two covers a lot, with quieter lanes in Taipa Village and Coloane. October to December is dry and pleasant; summer is hot, humid and brings typhoons.
