Portuguese squares, egg tarts and casinos
Macau was a Portuguese territory for more than four centuries, and its historic centre, a UNESCO site, mixes wavy-tiled squares such as Senado Square with Chinese temples. The Ruins of St Paul's, a surviving church façade, are the symbol of the city, and the A-Ma Temple predates the Portuguese. Macanese cooking blends the two cultures: try minchi, African chicken and Portuguese egg tarts. On the Cotai Strip, huge casino resorts and shows dominate. Taipa and Coloane villages are quieter.
