Northern Mariana Islands

Saipan's clear lagoon, wartime history and quiet neighbouring islands.

The Northern Mariana Islands are a US commonwealth north of Guam, with most visitors staying on Saipan. Its western lagoon is calm and clear, and the Grotto is a famous dive site. Managaha Island is a short boat ride offshore, and Banzai Cliff and Suicide Cliff recall the 1944 battle. Tinian's huge wartime runways at North Field and Rota's quiet reefs are easy side trips.

The islands mix Chamorro and Carolinian traditions with strong Japanese, Korean and American influences, which shows in the food. Days are spent diving, snorkelling and driving between beaches and viewpoints. A hire car makes sense on Saipan, and small planes hop to Tinian and Rota. December to June is the drier season; typhoons are most likely from July to November.
