Lagoon beaches and wartime cliffs
Saipan is the largest island of the Northern Mariana Islands, with a long sheltered lagoon along its west coast and rugged cliffs in the north. Micro Beach and Managaha Island, a short boat ride across the lagoon, have white sand and clear water for snorkelling. The Grotto, a collapsed limestone cavern open to the sea, is a famous dive site. The island saw fierce fighting in 1944, and Banzai Cliff and Suicide Cliff in the north, along with the American Memorial Park, are places of remembrance.
