Malta's silent walled city on a hilltop
Mdina, the old capital of Malta, is a fortified town of noble palaces and narrow lanes on a hill in the island's centre. Few cars are allowed inside, earning it the name the Silent City. Visit St Paul's Cathedral and its museum, walk the bastions for views across the island, and step outside the walls to Rabat for the catacombs of St Paul and St Agatha. It is at its most atmospheric in the evening after the tour groups leave.
