Maputo

Jacarandas, seafood and Art Deco by the bay

Maputo lies on a bay in the far south of Mozambique and is known for its broad jacaranda-lined avenues and relaxed, Portuguese-influenced atmosphere. The Maputo railway station, with its green dome, is one of the city's landmarks, and the Iron House is often attributed to the Eiffel company. The Fortaleza, the fish market and the Núcleo de Arte gallery are worth visiting. Peri-peri prawns and matapa are local favourites. Inhaca Island and the beaches of Ponta do Ouro are within reach.
